STavaNger

The Pulpit Rock- picture taken before the hike !

Stavanger is Norway's 4th largest city and is a fascinating mix or old and new. Its history stretches back deep into the Middle Ages. Stavanger was once a tranquil market coastal town and then later an important fishing port. But it was the 1969 discovery of oil offshore that forever changed the now bustling city's fortunes and landscape.

July 6th - 8th we planned to hike up the famous Preikestolen or The Pulpit Rock. The remarkable rock plateau stands 604 meters above Lysefjordan. and receives 200,000 visitors every year. The square formation of a rock resembling a pulpit juts out from the surrounding mountainside .

We took a ferry from Stavanger to Tau and a bus from there to Preikestolen. Travel time is about an hour each way.

Our hike starts from the car park area where our bus stops. Took us about 3 hours to reach the plateau.

Neverending stone steps all the way up...  not easy on our knees !

The hike is about 3.8 km each way with a difference in altitude of 330meters.
